‍Pure Energie is a renewable energy company based in the Netherlands with 30 years of experience in wind and solar power. As part of their entry into the energy storage market, they launched a 1 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) to gain firsthand operational experience. The storage system is the first in a series of planned projects across the country.
Goals

The Challenge
Pure Energie’s first BESS project was implemented by an integrator. The integrator provided access to operational data, but did not edit the data into easy-to-understand visualizations or insights.  After a few months into operation, the asset manager identified an issue with one battery string (String 1.8), which showed abnormal SoC spreads.
A high SoC spread reduces usable energy capacity and should be resolved as soon as possible. Without clear visualization, diagnosing the imbalance was difficult and time-consuming.
The core challenges included:
- No intuitive tools to monitor and visualize the growing SoC spread from 10% in July to 74% in October
- Lack of clear, aggregated data to communicate the issue effectively with internal teams and integrator
- Risk of reduced system lifespan, efficiency, and increased maintenance costs due to SoC spread

The Solution
With insights and visualizations from TWAICE, Pure Energie could finally “see” what was happening inside the BESS and improve its performance:

Heatmaps illustrated how String 1.8 deteriorated over time. The illustration of the string behavior made it easy to detect the spread increase and understand how it evolved—from minor issues in the summer to a significant imbalance in fall.
2. Escalating With Data
The asset manager was able to visualize the issue’s progression and provide evidence to leadership and the integrator. The heatmap provided the data needed to justify intervention.
3. Validating Maintenance
Following the major software update by the integrator, the asset manager monitored the system in real-time. Improved heatmap visualizations confirmed that the SoC imbalance had been resolved.
