Stephan’s first grid storage system was a 200 kWh unit he built module by module during his PhD at TUM, back when a kilowatt hour cost €1,200 to €1,500. Today TWAICE monitors around 130 utility-scale projects and more than 20 GWh across Europe, the US, Chile and Australia. With host Maximilian Hüls, he talks about where things really go wrong: the controls, EMS, BMS, inverters and HVAC wrapped around the battery. They also get into why no two fleets are alike, and how accountability gets murky once multiple OEMs, EPCs and contracts are involved.
