Improving the Accuracy of Battery Models Using the Open-Circuit-Voltage (OCV) Curve

The OCV is a key element in electric models of lithium-ion batteries and describes the thermodynamic voltage at equilibrium. It refers to the voltage of the battery when it is not connected to a load or a charging device.

Unfortunately, the change of this OCV curve over aging is often neglected in battery modeling, resulting in challenges regarding accuracy of battery models over battery lifetime.

In this article, we describe how considering OCV aging is vital when designing and manufacturing electric cars:

  • How the OCV curve can be used for estimating State of Charge
  • How the OCV curve can help manufacturers ensure the correct battery size
  • Integrating OCV aging into battery modeling
